The black-box trap

A PDF stores its text as actual characters, separate from anything drawn on top. When you cover a line with a filled shape, you add a new object above the text — but the original characters are untouched in the file. That's why "redactions" leak so often: the black box looks solid on screen, yet a quick select-all and copy, or opening the file in another reader, brings the hidden words straight back. It has happened in court filings, government releases and corporate reports more times than anyone would like to admit.

What real redaction does
